A Toolkit to Build Support for Higher Density Housing

Advocates of Smart Growth and Livable Communities advocate compact, higher density housing to accomplish numerous objectives:

• Revitalize older neighborhoods
• Provide affordable, diverse housing
• Support retail in walking distance to housing
• Support public transit service
• Create pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly communities
• Reduce inefficient, sprawl-type development.

However, these goals often run into opposition from local residents who associate higher density housing with poorly designed projects, incompatible development, traffic congestion, crime and lowered property values. The Compact Development Compact Disc (CD2) provides a toolkit for local government officials, community leaders, planners, developers, Smart Growth advocates and community housing experts to address these concerns. CD2 includes the following:

• A 65-slide PowerPoint™ presentation that makes the case for compact development from an economic, social and environmental standpoint;
• Case studies of 60 projects from throughout California with numerous images of each project along with information on density, affordability, and amenities;
• The Compact Housing Image Survey and the “Guess the Density Game”, two participatory tools to engage viewers in a discussion of higher density housing and the importance of good design.
• Design guidelines for well-designed compact development.
• Additional Resources including some web links and a document on Property Values and Affordability.

Software Requirements: A complementary edition of PowerPoint 97/98 Viewer™ is included on the disk. However, to fully customize the presentations, users will need Microsoft's PowerPoint 97/98™ or later.
